Shop Upgrade Weekend

I worked my butt off on the shop this weekend. I ask you please excuse the brevity of this post.

The mostly empty shop.

Because of all the work - and a few purchases - it feels as though the shop progressed more this past weekend than in the two preceding years.

Electric
With a few hours work on Tuesday and Wednesday I finished the 110V wiring in the shop.

So many wonderful outlets.

Floor
Since my family was away this past weekend, I took the opportunity to empty the shop and install a floor. I’ll go into more detail in a post dedicated to the shop floor. For now I’ll simply say that it’s nice to have wood under my feet.

I just need to make a threshold and the floor is done.

AC
This was a purchase, rather than an improvement I made (such as the electric & floor). I bought myself a simple window air conditioner after I finished the electric. I installed it last night. This should let me use the shop during the coming heat wave.

Jointer
This purchase was simply an oportunity I couldn’t turn down. The massive old 8” jointer was posted to Craig’s list friday. When I emailed on Saturday it was still availble. Sunday morning I check it out, saw the wonderful care that had been given to all of the tools in its shop and took it home. I have a bit more to do on the shop before I monkey with it, but I can’t wait to set it up and get it running (it was running, I just had to take it apart to move). Hopefully I can get some Infinity Carbide Tipped Jointer Knives to fit it.

Aint she pretty?

That’s all I accomplished this weekend. Hopefully I’ll have another productive one soon. Have you managed to have a productive weekend recently?

Weekend Project Progress

Hi! I hope that you had a great labor day weekend!! We labored a little too much. Ok thats an exaggeration ... but getting some of our furniture ready to sell took a lot of time!

A large chunk of that time was getting the grasscloth and nailhead feature wall ready to sell. When we made the wall, we werent thinking about how we were going to get it out of the room (time crunch for Creating with the Stars) ... we ended up rough cutting it in three pieces in the room and then we cut the edges again, re attached the trim, and added new trim so that the individual panels would make sense. The center panel is on its side in this pic so that the wood filler was in the sun to dry. The buyers came 20 minutes early and we were still painting, awkward ... but we made it. We had to use a hair dryer to get the paint to dry faster, yikes!

Did you know that the herringbone driftwood table wasnt the original intent for the wood we collected? Back in March, for Creating with the Stars, I had another project planned that I never got to, so I had some roughly cut pieces of wood laying around. David made a few more cuts and we now have long 1/2" square pieces.

I started on a project, but Im not as excited about it as I should be, so I think Im going to rethink things ... sometimes you just need a day or two to clear your head. Right? Stay tuned :)

Today we started on the Eames shell chair. We werent in love with the burnt orange color (I tend to like brighter, bolder colors) We decided to try dyeing it charcoal first. If it doesnt work out, well try reupholstering it or taking the foam off and sanding it down to the fiberglass (worst case ... since weve already done it twice and it was A LOT of work!)

Kara Paslay dyed a chair with similar fabric (not color, but material and weave), so we decided to give it a try using the same technique. Kara didnt have issues with the color transferring to clothes, so Im hoping well have the same luck. We thought about using spray fabric paint, but were concerned that it would change the texture of the fabric, so decided to try dye first.

After the first and second coat, the gray looks very purple, so I think using jet black dye will be our best option. Im going to get more dye tomorrow and give it a try.

So no finished projects this weekend, but thats ok :) Hopefully, Ill have lots to share soon!
